I have one partical set (back only of some of Bob's awsome Quilted Sapele left after the build I have going on now. And I have full but narrow set of Quilted Maple. So I am going to combine them into a 3 piece back cutaway OM or an SJ. Anyway my questions is what is everyone's opinion on either Qlt'd Maple sides with Qlt'd Maple outer back slats and Qlt'd Sapele center slats. Qlt'd Maple Sides with Qlt'd Sapele outer slats and Qlt'd Maple center slat binding will be Snakewood, I have not desided on the top or pufling maybe no side perfling and a Qlt'd Sapele end graft. But my question is on the arrangment of the back slats |

My vote is Sapele centre slat with snakewood purfling. (Almost forgot -- Sapele end graft with snakewood purfling as well) |

Yep, I agree with the rest. I`m going with the same type of scheme with walnut and pear (out of necessity), with a taper on the center piece similar to and end graft. IMHO, the taper will keep it from having that "mass produced" look. |

The center slat will be a taper as well this. Seems like everyone is picking the exact idea I first envisioned. I figured inlaid Snakewood seam strips on each side of the center slat, Snakewood binding, Qlt’d Sapele end graft with Snakewood binding used as a wide purfling on each side of the end graft to mirror the back center slat, Snakewood fretboard and peghead binding. Now to figure out what top. |

I'll be perverse and say maple centre, sapele outer sections, centre piece width of heel growing to 3-4" at tail, with maple sides. I think the binding has to be very subdued and would bind in holly or mad rose. I think snakewood would be competing for attention too much. Colin |

I'm with Colin. I think it would look cool to have the maple in the middle of the back, giving more of a balanced, alternating-color effect that would emphasize the symmetry. Putting the sapele in the middle, I think, could look more like you just had to stick something in there because your maple wasn't wide enough; whereas, putting the sapele in the outside sections would have a more striking, unusual effect that would make a stronger statement and look more like you meant to do that. |

Oh, yeah, and I also have doubts about the snakewood working well with the quilted maple and sapele. |

I like the Qlt'd Maple sides with Qlt'd Maple outer back slats and Qlt'd Sapele center slats. You could then do something dramatic by matching your sapele on the back to the bottom of the sapele end graft and bring it up to the top in an interesting shape. Philip |

The more I look at Cocephus's picture the more I like the maple in the middle. Im not sold yet but will compair tonight. also considering the Madrose for the binding. will look at that as well. |

Thanks a lot Coe, The pear wood is nice, first time i see it, it'll make a fine combination with walnut! That's what my family name means in french!
